There are a lot of things I have gained a new perspective and appreciation for after going through this surgery with my mom. First, I will always be sensitive to families going through similar surgeries and will pray diligently for them. I may have found my calling when I retire..volunteering in the Critical Care Waiting Room. What a blessing those sweet ladies were to so many of us. It was so sad to see some waiting by themselves with no other support there–one of the volunteers even shared with me that there was one patient that had been there over a week and had not had one visitor…my heart broke. This also made me most grateful for our family and the love and support that we have from so many.
Second, I will take more seriously the need to pray for families who are separated for a long period of time due to military involvement, medical issues, missions, international travel, etc. It has been very difficult being separated from my family during this time, although we all know that it has been necessary for me to be with my mom and a blessing.
Third, I have a new appreciation for nurses and doctors. Fortunately, we had a wonderful surgeon, nurses and assistants. There was one assistant that stood out more than the others, Janice. She was so precious and really cared for my mom during recovery. When mom and I were complimenting her the day we were leaving, she was in tears. I hope others, Christians especially, show their appreciation and gratitude to those who care for our loved ones. After mom’s doctor’s appointment today, I delivered some chocolate/peanut butter bars to the 2nd floor nurses’ station. Wouldn’t you know it, the person I handed them to was mom’s nutritionist. I just laughed and said, “I know these are not very nutritious but it is a special treat for the nurses who took care of my mom.” She smiled and said, “I think it will be just fine.”
